About Me
My name is Emma, and I am a qualified primary teacher with over 12 years of experience. I have taught every curriculum subject across all primary year groups and have developed particular expertise in supporting children who are new to English or have English as an Additional Language (EAL). I have received specialist training in helping EAL learners learn to read and build essential vocabulary. I also have extensive experience working with children with Special Educational Needs (SEN).
I have been tutoring for four years and, in July 2024, I launched my own tuition business to focus fully on supporting children outside the classroom. I work with a wide range of learners, offering high-quality, tailored sessions to meet individual needs—whether a child needs help catching up, stretching further, or preparing for an exam.
I have a special interest in how children and adults learn to read, and I have significant experience teaching, tutoring, and administering the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check and Year 2 SATs. I am trained in several phonics schemes, including Read Write Inc, Little Wandle Letters and Sounds, and Floppy Phonics.
I particularly enjoy tutoring maths and helping children—and their parents—overcome any nervousness they may feel about the subject. Through the use of practical resources and games, I aim to make maths engaging and accessible, showing that everyone can succeed with the right support.
I also support students preparing for Functional Skills Maths and English, as well as those working towards the 11+ entrance exams. My sessions are engaging, purposeful, and designed to build both skills and confidence in a supportive environment.

At Tuition With Emma C, I provide personalised, high-quality educational support tailored to each learner’s unique needs. I work with children aged 4–14 to help them build confidence, improve self-esteem, and enjoy learning across core subjects. My sessions are designed to support individual learning styles and make progress feel achievable and enjoyable.
I also offer targeted preparation for Key Stage 2 SATs and GL-style 11+ assessments, helping children feel confident and well-prepared for these important milestones.
In addition to primary and early secondary tuition, I support older learners working towards Functional Skills qualifications in both English and maths—whether they are re-sitting exams, returning to education, or working towards a specific goal.
Home Education Support

Home education can take many forms, and families choose it for a variety of reasons—whether it’s to spend more time together, because the school environment wasn’t the right fit, to better support a child with special educational needs, or to follow a more interest-led approach to learning.
Whatever your reason, my tuition is designed to complement the education you're already providing at home. I work in partnership with families to provide flexible, child-led support that starts with the child’s interests. Through engaging and purposeful sessions, we explore key subjects such as English, maths, and science, often through themes or topics that the child enjoys—sometimes without them even realising how much they’re learning.
Tuition can take place online or in person and can be tailored to support long-term learning, fill gaps, or provide structure and accountability.
Keep-Up and Catch-Up Tuition

I offer supportive English and maths tuition for primary-aged children who need extra help to keep up, build confidence or close gaps in their learning.
With extensive knowledge of the primary curriculum, I adapt each session to suit the child’s needs and pace. As a former maths lead in a primary school, I understand how maths develops from EYFS to Year 6 and how to support children at every stage.
In maths, I focus on core concepts using practical resources, visual representations and games to build a secure understanding. These approaches are effective for children of all ages, not just those in early years.
In English, I support reading, writing and spelling through short, manageable tasks, phonics and spelling games, and texts linked to the child’s interests. Many children can be reluctant to engage in English tasks, so I aim to create a calm, supportive learning environment that helps build confidence and encourages steady progress.
Whiteboards are used regularly as they offer a low-pressure way for children to practise skills and try out ideas.
Support for Children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

I have extensive experience supporting children with Special Educational Needs (SEN), including those with autism, ADHD, dyslexia and education-related anxiety. My sessions are calm, structured and responsive to each child’s learning needs, with a strong focus on building confidence and creating a positive learning environment.
As a class teacher, I regularly wrote and reviewed My Plan targets and was actively involved in implementing and reviewing Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). I’ve attended training on a range of SEN-specific approaches and use many of these naturally in my tutoring, such as visual supports, step-by-step teaching, reduced-pressure tasks and movement breaks.
I also have knowledge of British Sign Language (BSL) and have used signs to support communication, particularly with learners who are non-verbal or have limited speech. I find that even basic signing can enhance understanding and help build positive relationships in sessions.
Whether your child has a diagnosis, is awaiting assessment or simply needs a more individualised pace, I tailor each session to support steady progress in a way that feels manageable and encouraging.
Support for Children Learning English (EAL)

Supporting children who are new to English or learning English as an Additional Language (EAL) has been a key part of my teaching journey. Before qualifying as a teacher, I trained as an Ethnic Minority Teaching Assistant (EMTA), where I learned how to teach children with no English to read using phonics and to build vocabulary through the use of pictures, games and books.
I spent nine years teaching in a diverse school community where over 40 languages were spoken. Many children arrived with little or no English, and I gained a deep understanding of how to support them in accessing the curriculum while developing language skills at the same time.
In tuition, I use the same proven techniques to help EAL learners grow in confidence with English. I focus on:
-
Vocabulary development in context
-
Reading and comprehension using visual prompts and structured questioning
-
Speaking and listening through games, discussion and role play
-
Writing support through sentence structure, modelled examples and guided tasks
Sessions are carefully adapted to meet each learner’s current level of English and are paced to allow steady, supported progress. Whether your child is completely new to English or working towards greater fluency, I provide friendly, practical tuition to help them succeed.
I also offer online tuition for children living abroad or those who are new to the UK and would benefit from focused support in building their English skills in preparation for school or daily life.
11+ Preparation

I have extensive knowledge of the 11+ exams and what is needed to prepare children effectively, particularly for GL-style assessments. I support children in developing the core skills required for success in verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, English and maths, using tried-and-tested strategies and well-chosen resources.
It doesn’t matter what stage your child is at in their 11+ journey — I work with children from Year 4 onwards, providing early exposure as well as more structured preparation in Year 5. My sessions are carefully tailored to your child’s pace, focusing on building skills, confidence and exam technique.
Whether your child is just getting started or working towards their final preparation, I offer supportive, structured tuition to help them feel calm, confident and ready.
Functional Skills

I offer Functional Skills tuition in English and maths for learners working from Entry Level through to Level 2. I have experience working with young people with autism, ADHD, and those experiencing education-related anxiety or with other special educational needs.
My approach is calm, encouraging and flexible, with lessons tailored to meet each learner’s needs. Whether the aim is to gain a qualification for college, employment or everyday life, I support learners in building practical skills and growing in confidence at a pace that suits them.
Please note that I do not book or administer exams, but I am happy to help you find a suitable exam centre and understand how to register when the time is right.
Sessions are available online or in person.
